2024 Healthy Resolution

Jakarta, IO – The heart is a vital organ in the body that plays a crucial role in maintaining good health. Living with a healthy heart not only makes us feel fit but also provides energy and enthusiasm to live our daily lives. According to epidemiological data of Ministry of Health, coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death and the biggest burden of health financing of year 2023. Entering the New Year 2024, we should make a healthy resolution to be free from coronary heart disease.

Coronary heart disease is a condition in which the arteries are unable to deliver enough oxygen-rich blood to the heart. This condition affects the larger coronary arteries on the surface of the heart. This heart disorder can cause several complaints, ranging from chest pain, shortness of breath, and heart attack symptoms. This disease is one of the serious scourges that needs to be watched out for because it can in extreme cases result in death.

“Now is the right time to start a healthy resolution. Coronary heart disease comes suddenly, but can actually be prevented with a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, the awareness of Indonesian people to live a healthy life is very minimal because they feel they are fine. Coronary heart disease patients are in fact getting younger: the current trend is under the age of 40. Smoking is the strongest and most independent risk factor,” said dr. Mega Febrianora, Sp.JP(K), FIHA, FAPSC, CRFC, in the talk show “Healthy Resolution 2024: Healthy Heart, Energetic Life”, which was held last December.

SMART Tools

The cardiologist from the National Cardiovascular Center Harapan Kita, Jakarta, explained that the course of coronary heart disease is progressive, not sudden. “We should adopt a healthy lifestyle by quitting smoking, consuming a balanced healthy diet, exercising regularly, and getting enough rest, especially if there is a family history of coronary heart disease. It is better to prevent because even if patients have had a stent installed, it does not mean that completely cured because they still have to take blood thinning and cholesterol-lowering drugs for life.”

In the end, dr. Mega emphasized that quitting smoking is one of the major efforts to avoid risk factors. For exercise, she recommends consistently doing 150 minutes per week. “Choose walking or cycling by fulfilling the SMART principle, namely specific, measurable, acceptable, relevant, and time-based, so that it can increase VO2 max for heart cell fitness,” she concluded.
