Govt asks Malaysia to stop caning illegal migrant workers from Indonesia

Jakarta, IO – This was conveyed by Vice President Ma’ruf Amin after a bilateral meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuching, Sarawak, Tuesday (28/11), per Antaranews, Wed (29/11).

“No more caning. The punishment is only for criminals,” said Ma’ruf. During the meeting, Ma’ruf also asked the Malaysian government to enhance protection for Indonesian migrant workers. According to him, protection for domestic sector workers is one of the key issues that must be prioritized.

“Regarding the issue of Indonesian migrant workers, we hope that there will be improved protection and a quick response,” explained Ma’ruf.

Indonesian ambassador to Malaysia Hermono stated that currently there are around 57,000 Indonesian migrant workers working in the domestic sector in Malaysia. This figure does not include undocumented or illegal migrant workers.

“There is a legalization process underway so the caning must stop,” said Hermono. (un)
