Explosion in South Jakarta Kills 1, Suspected from a Buried Bomb

Jakarta, IO – An explosion occurred in a house that was being renovated on Perahu Street, Setiabudi, South Jakarta. The Gegana (bomb squad) team was immediately deployed to sterilize the explosion site. One person reportedly died.

The source of the explosion is thought to be from a bomb buried underground. When workers were digging the ground to build a foundation, they accidentally triggered the bomb.

“The explosion was loud and could be heard all the way from the sub-district office,” said Syamsul Huda, head of South Jakarta fire department, per Detikom, Wednesday (18/10).

The incident occurred at 1:45pm WIB but the fire brigade was only alerted to the incident five minutes later, Setiabudi Police chief Commissioner Arif Purnama Oktora.

Some of the injured victim were taken to hospital. Residents living around the area said they were shocked and were told to stay away outside a 50-meter radius. (bp)
