CWGI: Maternal death and criminalisation of women still an issue in Indonesia

Jakarta, IO – A number of civil society organizations grouped under the CEDAW Working Group Indonesia (CWGI) published report relating to the implementation of the fulfilment of women’s human rights in Indonesia. This report will be presented at the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva in November 2022.

UPR is a mechanism under the auspices of the UN Human Rights Council carried out every four years, and is attended by UN member countries. The mechanism saw the presentations on human rights issues that still occur in each country, which will then be reviewed by other member countries.

“Human rights issues, including women’s rights in each country. We note the legal situation and conditions for women in Indonesia in the UN UPR,” said Asian Muslim Action Network (AMAN) Indonesia director Ruby Kholifah in a press conference on Friday (9/9).

Ruby said that there are at least eight issues concerning women’s rights raised in the CWGI report. First, women’s health which refers to the maternal mortality rate and the criminalization of women who choose abortion and access to reproductive health services which are still difficult for young people to obtain.
