Meanwhile, ASEAN foreign ministers on Thursday (4/8) warned that China’s military exercises around the Taiwan Strait could escalate into open conflict. “This situation can lead to miscalculation, serious confrontation, open conflict, and unforeseen consequences among major powers.”
European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, who is also in Phnom Penh for talks with ASEAN, also criticized China’s response.

“There is no justification to use a visit as pretext for aggressive military activity in the Taiwan Strait. It is normal and routine for legislators from our countries to travel internationally,” he tweeted.
Meanwhile, Cambodian Deputy Foreign Minister who is also ASEAN spokesperson Kung Phoak told reporters: “We hope de-escalation happens… and normalcy returns to the Taiwan Strait.” (rr)
