Jakarta, IO – The West Bandung regency administration has given up on handling the fire at Sarimukti final disposal site (TPA) in Cipatat district which has been burning for 23 days. The responsibility has been handed over to the provincial administration.

West Java Environmental Agency head Prima Mayaningtias explained that the handover coincided with the end of the emergency response period issued by the West Bandung Regency Government, per CNNIndonesia, Wednesday (13/9).

Prima explained that limitations were the reason the West Bandung Regency Government gave up on handling the fires that emerged on August 19.

“The provincial government will effectively take over from tomorrow,” said Prima. “There is organizational structure for the disaster emergency management team has been prepared involving all parties including the Provincial Government, BPBD, TNI, police, environmental agency, Social Services, Health Office, local officials and all city districts.”

Prima noted that only around 60 percent of the area has been contained. There are still many hotspots in the lower layers of the rubbish pile that have not been detected.

She said drones will be used to search for hotspots that were not yet visible so the extinguishing efforts can be more targeted on the source of the existing fire.

The West Java Provincial Government will also collaborate with a team of experts from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) to extinguish the fire. It is targeted that extinguishing efforts can be completed before September 25. (un)
