Bareskrim: Illegal IMEI Registration causes Rp353b in state losses

Jakarta, IO – National Police Criminal Investigation Bureau (Bareskrim) arrested six suspects in the illegal IMEI registration case at the Centralized Equipment Identity Register (CEIR), which was estimated to cause Rp353 billion in state losses, said Kabareskrim head Commissioner General Wahyu Widada in a press conference, Friday (28/7).

Wahyu said the perpetrators should have gone through the application procedure so that the IMEI was approved by the Communications and Information Ministry (Kominfo). Instead, the perpetrators immediately entered as many as 191,965 IMEIs to CEIR.

“The modus operandi is not to process the IMEI application with Kominfo,” he said.

The suspects are charged with Law 19/2016 on electronic information and transactions where they face up to 12 years of imprisonment.

Bareskrim revealed the suspects include individuals from the private sector who supplied the illegal electronic devices and a civil servants from the Industry Ministry and Customs and Excise Directorate General.

Bareskrim have also questioned 15 witnesses and four expert witnesses. (rr)
