Jakarta, IO – President Joko Widodo plans to send a high-ranking general to Myanmar to establish a dialogue with the military junta, according to Reuters, Wednesday (1/2).

Jokowi said Indonesia had similar experience which he hopes can help Myanmar transition to a democracy.

In addition, Indonesia is the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this year so it has the responsibility to resolve the vexing political problem in one of the bloc’s members.

“This is a matter of approach. We had similar experience here in Indonesia,” Jokowi said.

From an authoritarian regime ruled by a military strongman for more than three decades, Indonesia has now transformed into the world’s third largest democracy after the fall of New Order regime following the 1998 people’s power revolution, known as the Reformasi movement.
