“We conduct research using computer vision and machine learning technology and develop AI algorithms that are able to analyze dental images and detect cavities like what a dentist would do,” said Dr. Igi.

This research is the fruit of a 2021 joint research internship program between UGM’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (DTETI), Toyohashi University of Technology (Japan), and KLINIKOO.

It initially utilized a basic prototype of dental problem prediction technology based on dental photos supplied, albeit with limited accuracy. With the support of 2022 Kedaireka Matching Fund from the Education, Culture, Research and Technology Ministry, the research and development activity was carried out more intensively with a much larger set of data, up to 10,000 dental photos.

This was able to produce results with better accuracy. “Good research results can be obtained, in the form of an application of artificial intelligence to detect cavities based on photos with an accuracy of more than 80 percent,” said Dr. Igi. (rr)
