Jakarta, IO – Thousands of juvenile detainees have received reduced sentences from the Law and Human Rights Ministry (Kemenkumham) as part of the commemoration of the National Children’s Day.
Kemenkumham’s Community Guidance and Child Alleviation director general Pujo Harinto said the remission was given to fulfill their rights according to the law.
“National Children’s Day remissions this year were given to 1,091 juvenile detainees across Indonesia. As many as 23 of them were immediately released,” said Pujo, per CNNIndonesia, Monday (24/7).
Furthermore, Pujo also said that the constitution also states that every child has the right to growth and development free of discrimination.
He said that one of the steps taken by the ministry to meet this need is to transfer the child treatment system from the Children’s Penitentiary (Lapas) to the Juvenile Correctional Facility (LPKA). “The state not only recognizes rights, but also guarantees that they are fulfilled,” said Pujo.

He also asked all parties to treat the children fairly, even though they have violated the law. According to him, these children should not receive a stigma that prevent them from developing properly.
“We also hope that all communities, regional governments and social organizations will prioritize the best interests of children,” said Pujo. (un)
