Prevent sight disorders to remain productive

Jakarta, IO – The theme for “2023 World Sight Day” is “Eyecare in the Workplace”. This is no surprise, as according to the WHO, 2.2 billion people across the globe suffer from various kinds of sight disorders stemming from work, including blindness, and at least 1 billion of these cases were actually preventable.

Meanwhile, a joint study by the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) shows how 13 million of our working-age population live with sight disorders, as a result of their work. This is the consequence of the estimated 1%, or 3.5 million, non-fatal eye injuries in the workplace every year.

The increased duration of time people spend in front of computer screens in the workplace also exacerbates potential sight disorders. Problems such as ocular tension or exhaustion, which frequently accompany impaired sight, have increased.

“In short, the most important thing is to protect our eyesight by giving it proper rest from screen time. Optimum eye health will improve the quality of your life, as well as your productivity. We need to take care of our eyes, to protect them using personal protective devices at work,” warned Dr. Evi Susanti, S.Kp., M.Kes, Ministry of Health’s Director of the Prevention and Control of Incommunicable Diseases, in the “Don’t Let Sight Disorders Affect Your Productivity At Work” webinar held last Thursday (12/10/2023).

Proper Care of the Eye

The high incident of eye disorders resulting from workplace incidents can be prevented by proper care of the eye. Separately, OSIM Head of Operation, Nova Audianto, declared that his company pays special attention to the high incidence of sight disorder in the workplace. “As we all know, optimal sight allows us to have a better quality of life. Therefore, we remain committed to the creation of products that revolutionize eyecare and encourage better eye health for everyone, with a special focus on eye health at work. Our latest product in support of this belief is Uvision Air. This innovative eyecare product is designed to relax the eyes, i.e., to reduce tension from having spent hours before a computer screen, ideally restoring overall comfort to the eyes,” he said.

Its main feature, a soothing air massage around the eye area, includes adjustable warmth, massage intensity, and massage mode, adjustments that the user can set up according to their personal needs. “Uvision Air is portable and easy to use. It is USB-rechargeable. It has three programs: soft mode to improve the quality of sleep, medium mode to refresh the eyes, and hard mode to prevent aging. Use just 10 minutes a day for optimum results,” Nova said.

To manually forestall exhaustion of the eyes, every time we use the computer or laptop, implement the “20-20-20” method: take a 20-second break by looking at an object located 20 feet away for 20 seconds. (est)
