Ponorogo sets sights on a global cultural spotlight

Jakarta, IO – Ponorogo Regent Sugiri Sancoko announced that the annual “Grebeg Suro 2024” will be held from June 27 to July 6, 2024, at the Ponorogo Regency Square. “Grebeg Suro is a symbol of Ponorogo’s pride and cultural identity,” said Kang Giri, during a press conference at the Ponorogo Regency Pavillion on Monday, May 27, 2024. 

This year, Grebeg Suro will not only feature the Expo, Youth Reog Festival, and National Reog Festival, but also Reog performances from other countries. A dozen other events will also take part in the Grebeg Suro 2024 lineup. 

Kang Giri hopes this event will be the perfect platform to elevate Ponorogo’s culture to a more global level. He urged the Grebeg Suro event organizers to thoroughly design a unique concept.

“We seek to make Reog Ponorogo one of the Intangible Cultural Heritages (ICH) recognized by UNESCO,” said Sugiri.

The Grebeg Suro 2024 event is targeting not only domestic tourists but also an international audience. Giri is confident that Ponorogo’s cultural wealth can capture global attention. “Once we capture global attention, Ponorogo’s position on the global cultural tourism map will improve significantly,” Sugiri confidently stated. 

Kang Giri invited all parties, including the media and the public, to join in celebrating Grebeg Suro 2024. “I am confident this annual cultural festival will be Ponorogo’s center of pride,” he concluded. (des/ast)
