Online gamblers will not get social aid, Jokowi clarifies

Jakarta, IO – President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said online gamblers will not receive social assistance (bansos) program from the government. He denied that there was such plan, thus putting an end to the widely-circulated news, per Detikcom, Wed (19/6).

The news began with the comment from the Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendy. He argued that because online gamblers can be classified as “victims of poverty”, they are entitled to get government’s assistance.

“We can include them in the DTKS (Integrated Data for Social Welfare) as a recipient of social assistance program,” said Muhadjir.

However, a few days later, Muhadjir clarified that many parties have misinterpreted his statement. What he actually meant, he said, was that social assistance can be distributed to the families of online gamblers.

“The ones I meant by victims are the nuclear family members of the online gamblers who are suffering from material, financial and psychological harms. Those are the ones whom the government will help,” explained Muhadjir. (un)
