Jakarta, IO – Karian village in Sajira district, Lebak regency, Banten will soon go under water after a dam construction has been finished.

A village resident named Supriyani revealed that plans to build a dam has been in place since 2015. However, land acquisition and construction only started about two years ago, per DetikTravel, Fri (10/11).

The residents received the compensation payment two years ago and have been relocated to Karian Baru village, which is approximately one kilometer away.

He said that there are still six households who are staying in the village because they have yet to receive the payment. “They will move once they receive the payment because they worry that their houses and land will soon be inundated after the dam becomes operational,” said Supriyani.

As per report from Antara, the reservoir is set to be inaugurated by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in December 2023. The construction has been carried out since 2015 with a reservoir capacity of 314.7 million cubic meters and a submergence area of 1,740 hectares.

It is hoped that the reservoir, third largest dam in Indonesia, can soon supply freshwater water for 5 million residents and industries in nine regencies/municipalities in the provinces of Jakarta and Banten.

The dam will also be used for irrigation and power generation with a capacity to produce up to 1,8 megawatts of electricity. (at)
