Jakarta, IO – BBC, a broadcaster based in London, released a list of influential and inspiring women in the world in the “BBC 100 Women.”

On the list, there are two women from Indonesia. They are Sumini, an environmental observer who the BBC calls a ‘forest manager’, as well as Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi, Indonesian rock-climbing athlete.

Sumini was seen as a woman who was able to lead the fight against the climate crisis. She is noted for taking concrete action and working with other women in the community, per BBC on Thursday (23/11).

Her community even received approval from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) which allowed the villagers at Damaran Baru, Aceh, to manage the 251-hectare forested area for 35 years.

Sumini is now leading the Village Forest Management Unit which actively works to prevent illegal logging and poachers who threaten the endangered Sumatran tiger, pangolin and other wildlife.

Meanwhile, Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi made a name for herself when she qualified for the 2024 Olympics, when rock climbing will be included for the first time.

The BBC even called Desak the “Queen of Indonesian Rock Climbing”. She has gone rock climbing since she was in elementary school in Bali. She then grew to love the sport.

“BBC 100 Women” is an annual award given by the BBC to 100 influential and inspirational women around the world. The awards are usually accompanied by documentaries, features and interviews published and broadcast across BBC platforms. (un)
