Jakarta, IO – Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said the growing cases of trafficking in persons (TIP) has prompted Indonesia to take a number of measures to address the scourge.

One of them is to deal with the use and abuse of online technology in human trafficking, per Katadata, Friday (11/8).

According to her, currently many human trafficking syndicates deftly use technology to recruit and exploit victims to work in a scam industry. Retno said the Indonesian government has encountered thousands of such cases.

“The government has helped more than 2,800 Indonesian citizens who fell victim to such practice in neighboring countries, and 40 percent of them are victims of human trafficking,” said Retno.

The Indonesian government calls on member countries in the Bali Process to prevent the Asia-Pacific region from becoming a hotbed of human trafficking.

Retno also encouraged businesses in the region to take part in prevention efforts. One of them is by upholding a fair and transparent recruitment process.

“Businesses should develop due diligence standards to ensure fair, transparent and ethical recruitment and payment,” said Retno.

Retno also urged Asean member states to use technology to counter human trafficking. One way to do this is by raising awareness in social media about the issue.
