Jakarta, IO – Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School in Indramayu is in the spotlight for a number of controversies. One of them is the mixing of male and female students during worship.

The controversy about the Islamic boarding school located in Indramayu cannot be separated from the figure of its leader Panji Gumilang. The educational institution is also suspected of being affiliated with the Indonesian Islamic State (NII) movement. Panji was summoned by the authorities to answer this allegation in 2011.

A slew of controversies on Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School prompted the government and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) to intervene, per Kompas, Wednesday (21/6).

Vice President Ma’ruf Amin asked the Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs minister Mahfud MD and Religious Affairs minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas to address the matter.

Ma’ruf said Mahfud and Yaqut have to intervene if the results of the study showed that irregularities have taken place at the Islamic boarding school.

He said the government would hear and consider the views of various Islamic organizations regarding the matter.
