Jakarta, IO – Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi conveyed Indonesia’s disappointment over the execution of four activists by the Myanmar military junta. Retno said the move represented a setback for ASEAN’s “5-Point Consensus” on Myanmar.
“President Joko Widodo expressed his disappointment with the lack of significant progress from the 5-Point Consensus, including the death penalty for political prisoners,” said Retno, a reported by IDN Times, Thursday (28/7).
The four activists are supporters of Aung San Suu Kyi, the former de facto leader of Myanmar who was ousted in a coup on February 1, 2021. They were former MP Phyo Zeya Thaw, authors and activists Ko Jimmy, Hla Myo Aung, and Aung Thura Zaw.
In her statement, Retno repeatedly emphasized that the execution violated the 5-Point Consensus that was agreed upon by member states in the ASEAN Summit in early 2021.
The 5-Point Consensus are: 1) the immediate cessation of violence in Myanmar; 2) constructive dialogue among all parties concerned to seek a peaceful solution in the interests of the people; 3) mediation to be facilitated by an envoy of Asean’s chair, with the assistance of the secretary-general; 4) humanitarian assistance provided by Asean’s AHA Centre and 5) a visit by the special envoy and delegation to Myanmar to meet all parties concerned.
