2023 Asian Cup: Indonesia sets ambition to beat Iraq

Jakarta, IO – The Indonesian national men’s football team will play Iraq on Monday (15/1) at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium, Al-Rayyan. This is the first match between the two teams placed in Group D.

Of the last 12 encounters, Indonesia won twice, lost seven times and drew three times. At the last meeting in 2026 World Cup Qualification for the Asian zone at the Basra International Stadium on November 16, where Indonesia lost 1-5.

Indonesia’s two wins over Iraq happened in the 1968 Olympic Qualification (2-1) and the 2000 Independence Cup (3-0). Based on FIFA ranking per December 21 2023, Iraq is ranked 63rd in the world and 7th in Asia. Meanwhile, Indonesia is placed 146th.

Iraq won the Asian Cup in 2007 when Indonesia co-hosted it with Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. Meanwhile, the Garuda squad has only qualified for the Asian Cup five times, namely in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2007 and now 2023.

Indonesia’s other opponents in the same group are Vietnam and Japan.
