Jakarta, IO – Two scientists from Indonesia were elected to join the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). They are Prof. Edvin Aldrian who was re-elected as Vice Chair Working Group I and Dr. Joni Jupesta who is a member of The Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFI).

The two were voted in by IPCC member countries in a meeting held in Nairobi, Kenya, from July 25-28. They hoped to contribute to climate change mitigation by encouraging countries in the world to take urgent and more concrete climate action.

This position is not the first for Prof. Edvin, because since 2015 he has been trusted by IPCC to serve in the same position, per detikcom, Saturday (5/8). According to him, to become Vice Chair of Working Group I this time around was quite challenging because he had to compete with scientists from Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia.

In addition, voting at the IPCC also applies regionally. Because he comes from Indonesia, his voters come from Region 5, namely Southeast Asia, Southwest Pacific and Asean. “I was supported by island countries such as Tonga, Muslim countries such as Bangladesh, Bahrain, Turkey and Latin America,” said Edvin.

“In total, 74 out of 104 country representatives voted for me, so I was claimed as the winner,” he said. Previously, he had worked on a projection and modeling in the Southeast Asia region in collaboration with researchers from the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

The results of his research are used by countries in the world to become the basis for policies related to climate change. He has also conduct research in the field of urban climate related to air pollution which affects human health.

He hoped that climate change mitigation policies can be stronger because based on IPCC calculations since 2018, a temperature rise of 1.5 degrees Celsius is expected to occur in 2052.

But when the projection is made again three years later, in 2021, the forecast is getting worse. It has been estimated that the temperature rise will occur in 2042. In fact, the latest findings this year, it can happen as soon as 2030. (rr)
