Jakarta, IO – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with Arizona State University (ASU), announces the establishment of Maker Innovation Spaces (MIS) at three prestigious Indonesian universities: Universitas Hasanuddin (UNHAS), Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), and BINUS University.
With the goal of fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship and providing students with the tools and resources to turn their ideas into reality, inaugurations of these MIS mark a significant milestone in the collaboration between Indonesian and U.S. higher education institutions, aligning with Indonesia’s ambition to improve the quality of teaching and programs to help students become job-ready before graduation.
Mission Director of USAID Indonesia, Jeff Cohen said the Maker Innovation Spaces represent a significant investment in Indonesia’s future.
“By providing students with the tools, resources, and mentorship throughout their academic experience, they will be able to turn their ideas into reality. USAID is proud to be part of promoting innovation and creativity through a partnership between academia, businesses, and the government,” added Cohen.
Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including 3D printers, laser cutters, electronics prototyping kits, and woodworking tools, the MIS provides dynamic environments for students, faculty, and researchers to initiate, prototype, and develop solutions to real-world challenges. The spaces will facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and provide hands-on learning experiences.
“Through the USAID Higher Education Partnership Initiative (HEPI), we are honored to partner with our Indonesian counterparts in establishing these MIS. Together, we can catalyze innovation, drive economic development, and address pressing societal challenges through the power of education and collaboration,” said Jeffrey Goss, Associate Vice Provost, Southeast Asia at ASU.

The launch events brought together university leadership, industry partners, and government officials, highlighting a commitment to promote excellence in STEM higher education in Indonesia, nurture innovation ecosystems, and foster cross-cultural exchange. Students, faculty, and experts are invited to join in shaping the future of technology and entrepreneurship.
