Residents on Moa Island Hold Torch Parade to Remember Heroes’ Deeds

Tiakur, IO – To celebrate the 78th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia, residents on outlying Moa Island, Southwest Maluku regency, Maluku province held a torch relay around the town of Tiakur, Wednesday (16/ 8).

The evening parade was participated in by hundreds of people consisting of civil servants, community organizations, police and armed forces personnel, and high school, vocational and junior high school students.

They walked the distance of some 5-6 kilometers carrying torches while singing the national anthem. They started from the regent’s office and finished at the same place.

“This torch relay signifies our efforts to commemorate the deeds of the heroes who fought for Indonesia’s independence. Others may lay flowers on their graves, here we carry the torches in the hope that their fighting spirit will always remain alive and be carried on,” said one of the participants.

The parade was simultaneously carried out in the city, regency and provincial levels. (rr)
