Tangerang, IO – Residents of Bekelir village follow a long-standing hair washing tradition on the banks of the Cisadane River, Tangerang City, Banten (10/3).
This annual ritual is performed to signify the cleansing of one’s soul and heart before the start of Ramadan. It has been carried out for generations. Since 4pm WIB, dozens of men and women, from children to the elderly, have gathered on the river bank. They then started rubbing their heads using shampoo and rinsing them with water from the river that streams through three provinces. It is also a source of tap water for Tangering City and the surrounding areas.

The children can be seen having a field day playing and swimming with their friends and parents. However, there are also some residents who do not go down to the river; they simply pour water over their bodies from the river bank.
