Jakarta, IO – Ahead of the celebration of the 78th Indonesia’s independence day on August 17, a number of vendors at Jatinegara Market, East Jakarta, have started peddling independence-themed knick-knacks.
They sell flags, balloons and clothes emblazoned with the words “HUT Republik Indonesia.” There are also traders who sell various kinds of equipment for competitions such as race decorations, hand clappers to hand flags.
The prices vary from Rp10,000 to Rp400,000. This year, vendors are optimistic that sales will be busier than the previous years, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic curbs were lifted.

The theme of the independence commemoration this year is “Terus Maju Untuk Indonesia Maju” in accordance with the State Secretary circular. The public is expected to hoist the national flag in their respective neighborhood from August 1-31.
