Jakarta, IO – Indonesia and Suriname signed an MoU concerning cooperation in coastal environmental protection and mangrove rehabilitation on the sidelines of the 10th World Water Forum in Bali.

The MoU was signed by Minister of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), Siti Nurbaya, and the Minister of Spatial Planning and Environment of Suriname, Marciano Dasai.

“The aim of this collaboration is to advance and facilitate efforts to protect the coastal environment and rehabilitate mangroves, with the aim of increasing the ecological, social and economic benefits of mangrove ecosystems for both countries and contributing to overcoming the negative impacts of global climate change,” wrote KLHK on its website menlhk.go.id Wednesday (22/5).

The collaboration initiative began on January 25, when Dasai delivered a letter to Siti proposing collaboration through knowledge exchange and technical assistance related to coastal protection and mangrove rehabilitation. According to Dasai, his government is interested in the sediment capture unit project which has been successfully implemented in Demak, Central Java.
