BNPT to Tighten Security at Sepinggan Airport Ahead of Independence Anniversary Celebration at Nusantara

Jakarta, IO – The National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) has begun to tighten security at Sepinggan’s Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Airport (SAMS) in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan.

BNPT director for security of vital objects and transportation Sigit Karyadi explained that the measures are related to the commemoration of the 79th Indonesia’s Independence Day in the new administrative capital Nusantara (IKN) on August 17.

“This is because Sepinggan Airport is one of the main access points to IKN in North Penajam Paser,” said Sigit, per CNN Indonesia, Wed (19/6).

Security will be tightened at the airport’s perimeter, VVIP building, arrival and departure halls, as well as domestic and international cargo terminals.

BNPT is also preparing necessary personnel and security and safety support equipment, as well as evacuation routes. This was also mandated by the State Secretariat as a member of the security task force for the Indonesian independence ceremony.

SAMS Airport manager Ahmad Syaugi Syahab stated that the assessment was necessary to mitigate the possibility of intruders planning to carry out terrorist acts.

“This will ensure that the process of the seventeenth of August ceremony at IKN will be safe from potential terror attack. We need to assess and anticipate every point of vulnerability,” said Ahmad. (un)
