Jakarta, IO – Maintenance workers sprinkle water on the turf at the Prumpung Public Cemetery, Jakarta. The land crisis for public cemetery is getting worse. In recent years, the population continues to increase and the death rate has increased sharply, making the availability of burial space increasingly limited.

Data released by Jakarta Provincial Government reveals that the area of cemetery in Jakarta is currently only around 5.85 million square meters across 73 public cemeteries in the capital’s five administrative cities.

The problem is further exacerbated by death statistics from the Jakarta Statistics Agency. The death rate has continued to rise significantly from year to year, reaching 60,955 people in 2019, 74,310 people in 2020, and 111,088 people in 2021, putting further pressure on the supply of grave sites.
