Ensuring a safe Eid al-Fitr homecoming

Railway Level Crossings

Railway level crossings in several areas need to be guarded to prevent accidents. From 2018 to February 14, 2024, PT KAI recorded 2,022 incidents, with most accidents involving motorcycles involving 1,168 units (64 percent). The incidents that occurred at unguarded crossings amounted to 1,731 (86 percent).

Railway-level crossings in small cities and districts need better supervision. From 2022 to February 15, 2024, a total of 527 incidents (79.2 percent) occurred at city- or district-level crossings. As many as 118 incidents (17.7 percent) occurred at level crossings on rural roads, 12 incidents (1.8 percent) on provincial roads and 8 incidents (1.3 percent) on big national roads.

Providing extended public transportation services

A lack of extended public transportation services encourages scalpers to provide illegal transportation at a high travel rate. This will undoubtedly burden homecomers’ budgets and prevent them from taking mass transportation. Local governments must monitor a number of scalping practices at terminals, seaports, and ferry ports.

This is a great opportunity for the central government to assist local governments in improving public transportation in their districts. The study results show a high public interest in using public transportation. However, urban public transportation systems in many regions are mostly in very poor condition, with many no longer in operation.

Tips from the National Transportation Safety Commission

The National Transportation Safety Commission (NTSC) recommends the following 10 attitudes for driving when fasting: (1) get enough rest; (2) avoid foods that can cause drowsiness; (3) stick to the vehicle speed limits; (4) keep a safe distance from other vehicles; (5) take more breaks if you lose concentration; (6) check the tire pressure of the vehicle; (7) be patient and follow traffic rules; (8) understand the travel route before driving; (9) use navigation apps carefully to avoid dangerous alternative routes; and (10) avoid carrying too many passengers and too much cargo.

Meanwhile, if you’re riding a motorcycle at night, pay attention to the following: (1) ensure that your body is in a fit condition with enough rest and sleep; (2) avoid carrying excessive passengers and cargo; (3) avoid excessive speed (maximum 50 km/h); (4) use safety gear with bright colors and reflectors; (5) ensure that the lighting and braking systems are working properly; (6) maintain a safe distance from other motorcycle riders; (7) avoid deserted routes with minimal road markings; and (8) stop if you ever feel tired, in a safe place.

According to PT Jasa Raharja data (2023), there were 5,941 road accidents with 1,041 fatalities over the 10-day Eid al-Fitr season in 2022. During the same period in the Eid alFitr season of 2023, there were 4,703 road accidents, a 21 percent decrease, with 634 fatalities (a 39 percent decrease). The number of road accidents and fatalities is expected to decrease for the 2024 Eid al-Fitr seasonal holiday.
