Sri Lanka, IO – Sri Lanka is on the brink. After experiencing a protracted crisis, the country has declared a national emergency on Wednesday (13/7). The status was announced by Dinouk Colombage, spokesperson for Sri Lanka PM Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The announcement came just hours after President Gotabaya fled the country. The state of emergency is said to be in effect indefinitely.

“Since the president is abroad, a state of emergency has been declared to deal with the situation in the country,” Colombage said, according to Detik, quoting AFP.

Police said they had also imposed an indefinite curfew across the Western Province, which includes the capital Colombo to contain protests that intensified after Rajapaksa flew to the Maldives on a military aircraft.
