Jakarta, IO – In addition to the beauty of its beaches, Bali has many traditional villages that attract both local and foreign tourists. One of them is Penglipuran village, Kubu district, Bangli regency.

Besides being known for its strong traditions and culture, Panglipuran is also very clean to the point that Unesco named it the third cleanest village in the world. The achievement was made possible because of the awareness of the local community to maintain cleanliness and provide trash bins every 30 meters, per Detikcom, Fri (14/6).

The village also institutes a number of strict traditional rules such as a ban on motorized vehicles to keep the air clean. Tourists who wish to tour the village must walk or cycle.

It also has a peaceful atmosphere because the residents embrace the concept or philosophy of Tri Hita Karana. The teaching requires them to live in harmony with fellow beings, spiritual beliefs and nature in order to attain happiness.

The village, situated about 45 meters from Denpasar City, has received many awards including Kalpataru Award (the highest accolade for Indonesia’s environmental heroes), Indonesia Sustainable Tourism Award, and Top 100 Sustainable Destination.

According to local legend, Penglipuran was established about 700 years ago, during the Bangli Kingdom period. The story goes that the village is a gift from the king of Bangli to his people who fought against the Gianyar Kingdom. (bp)
