Nearly a dozen Indonesian citizens forced to become scammers in Cambodia

Jakarta, IO – 11 Indonesian citizens were forced to scam their compatriots from Cambodia. In a video, they said it never crossed their mind that they would be employed as scammers, per Detik, Friday (9/6).

“We were told that we would work at a call center, but in reality we were forced to scam our own fellow citizens,” said one of the victims, Heri, 38.

Before leaving for Cambodia, they said they were promised by an employment agency that they would be paid a salary of Rp12 million.

“We are under pressure to meet a target of around Rp60 million. But we never met their target during the two months of work,” he added.

Another victim, Steven, 29, said he was only paid around Rp5 million. He also revealed that their boss speaks Chinese.

In carrying out the operation, Steven said they were asked to approach potential victims personally via social media, then to first build up friendship, then proceed to courtship, and finally they would be lured to deposit a certain amount of money in an application called Mekri,” revealed Steven.

“All of the victims are Indonesians. Each of them was told to deposit Rp300,000,” said Steven. (un)
