Jakarta, IO – The scene of the construction at Dadap Beach, Tangerang regency, Banten, Tuesday (16/1). The project is an integral part of the coastal development in Jakarta, including coastal embankment to defend against storm surge/tidal flooding, reservoir and land reclamation.

According to Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto, the construction of the Giant Sea Wall is a strategic measure to prevent groundwater depletion and mitigate sea level rise in Java northern coast. Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto also emphasized the importance of the Giant Sea Wall in the security context.

This project is estimated to cost between US$50 billion to US$60 billion (Rp934 trillion). Currently, the progress has reached 13 kilometers out of a total of 46 kilometers planned in the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD). To speed it up, a 46 kilometer embankment will be prioritized, with the responsibilities spread among the Jakarta Provincial Government, state port operator PT Pelindo II or KSOP Sunda Kelapa and the Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Ministry.
