KLHK to speed up rehabilitation of 800,000 ha of disused mines

Jakarta, IO – The Environment and Forestry Ministry (KLHK) is going to accelerate the rehabilitation of disused mines covering a total area of 800,000 hectares across Indonesia, said minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar, per Katadata, Thu (13/6).

She elaborated that around 300,000 hectares of them are abandoned mining areas, the majority of them in Bangka Belitung, East Kalimantan, West Kalimantan and Southeast Sulawesi.

“We are working together with the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry. We have started the pilot project since 2017, but the discussion is not easy. We are coordinating with the Law and Human Rights Ministry to iron out the hurdles and synchronize the efforts,” she said.

According to Government Regulation 78/2010 concerning Reclamation and Post-Mining and ESDM Ministerial Regulation 18/2008 concerning Reclamation and Mine Closure, concession holders are required to set aside reclamation guarantee fund. Meanwhile, KLHK is responsible for the rehabilitation of river basin area (DAS). (bp)
