The ministry will take extra measures to protect the rights of migrant workers and prevent the recurrence of abuse and exploitation. Under the sharikah system, which replaces the kafala (individual employer/sponsor) system, employers must be legal entities appointed and held accountable by the government of Saudi Arabia.

This cooperation mechanism between Saudi Arabia and Indonesia is referred to as the One Channel System (SPSK) which involves 49 recruiting agencies Indonesia and 30 partner firms in Saudi Arabia.

“The SPSK system is legally agreed upon by the two countries to process the placement of Indonesian migrant workers to Saudi Arabia in the individual user sector. There is no other channel,” Rendra said.
