Jakarta, IO – Indonesia annually contributes 1.3 Gigaton CO2e to greenhouse gases (GHGs). Traction Energy Asia executive director Tommy Pratama said Indonesia placed 8th in the world in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, especially carbon dioxide (CO2).

“From 1980 to 2020, we can see a trend of quite sharp increase in greenhouse gas emissions. We contribute 1.3 GT CO2e every year,” said Tommy, per Katadata, Thu (11/1).

Tommy explained that the energy and transportation sectors are the largest contributors, accounting for 50.6 percent of total emissions in Indonesia in 2022. Therefore, he believes that the transition from dirty energy to low-carbon energy should be carried out in the near future.

“We must immediately make a switch. In making this transition we can develop domestic potential, from our own natural resources,” said Tommy.

Furthermore, he assessed that the commitment of Indonesia and other countries to switch to clean energy has not been strong enough. For example, the transition to clean energy is not yet mandatory for each country in the COP-28.

“Countries at the COP report emission reductions, but they are only on voluntary basis. In fact, efforts to reduce emissions are very important considering that the climate crisis threatens the existence of humans and the planet,” he said.

Meanwhile, the impact of the climate crisis is already very clear. He gave the example that last year’s temperature was the hottest in history, increasing by 1.5°C.

In addition, Indonesia has been impacted by the late coming of the rainy season by three months and crop failures in various regions. Weather and climate crisis should be taken seriously.

“We have experienced extreme weather or scorching heat or strong wind, rain and flash floods in recent times,” he pointed out. (bp)
