According to Arief, MB has been entering and leaving Indonesia 10 times since 1984. In 1998, he came to Indonesia to study at Gajayana University, Malang. He stayed in the country until 2006.

In 2011, MB illegally obtained Indonesian citizenship documents, including ID card, family registration card and birth certificates.

“The birth certificate states that he was born in Pacitan, Indonesia in February 1973. So he is 17 years younger,” said Arief.

According to him, all of the citizenship documents were issued by Tulungagung Civil Registry Office. However, the local government stated that MB was never legally an Indonesian citizen even though he married a local resident and has children.

Since obtaining an Indonesian citizenship, Arief said MB has applied for a passport three times to travel abroad. He suspected the purpose of his travel was to take care of his assets in Singapore.

“Based on the existing evidence, we are considering whether to bring this case to court or have him deported,” said Arief. (un)
