Jakarta, IO – The 10th World Water Forum (WWF) is set to be held on May 18-25 in Bali. Leveraging its status as the host of the high-profile international event, Indonesia will propose four concrete measures concerning hydro diplomacy.

“First, global agreement regarding the establishment of World Lakes Day. We have lobbied for this proposal on various occasions including at the UN, because the declaration of World Lakes Day is expected to be ratified in the second semester of 2024 in New York,” said Tri Tharyat, the Foreign Ministry (Kemlu) multilateral cooperation director general, per CNBC Indonesia, Mon (29/4).

“Second, concept related to integrated water management on small islands by establishing a center of excellence regarding water and climate security. Third, for the first time ever, the launch of a compendium of concrete projects which are currently being curated by the Indonesian government. It will be announced as one of the concrete results of the meeting in Bali,” Tri explained.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) report in 2022, water scarcity is becoming endemic as a result of the local impacts of water shortages, coupled with the acceleration and spread of freshwater pollution. This problem is exacerbated by various things, primarily climate change, increasing global conflict, and uncontrolled population and urbanization.

Therefore, this largest international meeting will focus on discussing and formulating water and sanitation management policies. Hopefully the formulated solutions will be successfully agreed and adopted to address various global water and sanitation challenges. (bp)
