Will the new criminal code erode democracy?

Jakarta, IO – Although democracy is far from perfect, it is arguably the best form of political system. But unfortunately, democracy is often hijacked by oligarchs who seek to steer public policy to benefit their own interests. Their influence must be curbed in order for democracy to flourish, said Dhyta Caturini, activist and founder of PurpleCode Collective on Friday (9/12).

Indonesia as a democratic country based on rule of law which means that the law is held paramount in state administration, the foundation upon which state agencies/institutions operate.

In this regard, the passage of the new criminal code (KUHP) can potentially undermine democratic values. There are many controversial articles that restrict human rights such as the right to privacy, sexual autonomy, freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly.
