In 2019, President Joko Widodo directed BMKG to conduct public education in disaster-prone areas. Jokowi also asked BMKG to speak out about the potential for earthquakes and megathrusts in Indonesian territory.

“We have to massively educate the public that our country is indeed prone to natural disasters. It must be intensive, whether it is to elementary, junior high, high school, college students. And convey it bluntly and directly. The potential is real,” said Jokowi when opening the BMKG national coordination meeting at the State Palace.

Jokowi said the purpose is not to make the public anxious but to educate people to be more vigilant. (rr)
