Putin also stated that NATO had initiated military encroachment on Russian soil. Everything suggests that “a battle with neo-Nazism is unavoidable.” He said that NATO nations, led by the US, refused to listen to Moscow’s stance and had “alternative plans” to prepare for an attack on Crimea. “The only correct decision is Russia’s pre-emptive rejection of attack,” he emphasized.

In his remarks, Putin added, “We are proud of a generation of heroic victors, and it is our obligation to honor those who vanquished Nazism.” He also wished the soldiers injured in the special military operation a swift recovery and offered to assist the families of the fallen heroes. Putin, together with Russian leaders and veterans, lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier following the military parade.

On May 8, local time, one day before Russia’s Triumph Day, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the Soviet Union on the 77th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s defeat in World War II, saying, “Just like in 1945, victory will be ours.” “It is our joint obligation to avoid the revival of Nazism, which has brought so much sorrow to peoples,” Putin stated.

At the same occasion, Putin expressed his wish for “all Ukrainians to have a peaceful and just future” and wished Ukrainian veterans of the Great Patriotic War a long and healthy life. “Today, the immense sacrifices made for the common triumph are the guarantor of our lives and freedom. This past must never be forgotten “Putin stated.

Referring to the special military operation in Ukraine, Putin stated that troops from the “Donetsk People’s Republic” and “Luhansk People’s Republic” are presently “fighting to get rid of Nazism, just like their forefathers did in the defense of the motherland.” He expressed hope that, like in 1945, the people of Donbass will finally triumph.

In an interview with Italian television on the 8th local time, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov stated that Victory Day will not influence Russian military activities in Ukraine. When asked if Victory Day will be a watershed moment in Russia-Ukraine war, he stated that Russian military would not attack on a specific day. “We will honor the victory solemnly, but the timing and tempo of the situation in Ukraine will be determined by the necessity to reduce the threat to civilians and Russian forces.”
