Jakarta, IO – The Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia (Menpora RI) Dito Ariotedjo is pleased that world-class basketball coach Phil Handy has come to Indonesia. The famed coach’s arrival is expected to help the development of Indonesian basketball.
This was conveyed by Menpora Dito after meeting Phil Handy at the Kemenpora Media Center, Tuesday 24 September afternoon. Dito is happy that a world-class coach could come to Indonesia, to share knowledge and provide training.
“I am very happy that today we have Phil Handy. As a coach, he is already world-famous. This is a blessing, where it is rare for a coach from the NBA to want to provide knowledge and training. And this time to a coach in Indonesia,” said Dito.
According to Dito, Phil Handy will provide training to the Indonesian national team coach while in Jakarta. This is very important, to strengthen the capacity of the players. “We must increase the capacity of our coaches, so that the performance of basketball players in Indonesia will also rise,” he added.
Dito sees the development of basketball in Indonesia as massively popular, but needing more for its full achievement. “Currently, Indonesian basketball is massively popular among the public. Therefore, in the future, the achievements and games of the Indonesian national basketball team must be able to improve”.
Regarding whether Phil Handy will train the Indonesian national basketball team, Dito said that Perbasi has had discussions and will see future developments. “Perbasi has conveyed their plans, and has discussed the matter with Phil Handy. Later we will see future developments on how Phil can help the development of Indonesian basketball”.
Meanwhile, Phil Handy said that he was quite happy to be able to come to Indonesia to share knowledge about basketball. Phil wants to help Indonesian basketball become recognized on a global scale.
“So, it is an honor for me to be here and be able to take part in training with young athletes, and help them get a glimpse of what several NBA athletes do every day,” he said.
Phil also considered how Indonesian basketball has great potential to develop. “Great to have the opportunity to be here and spend time with the coaches in Indonesia and with enthusiastic young athletes,” he said.

On September 25, 2024, Phil Handy was a speaker in a “coaches clinic”. On September 26 and 27, 2024, he shared coaching knowledge to children aged 14 to 18 years of age, through a coaching clinic organized at the GBK Arena Senayan. On September 28, 2024, Phil Handy will attend a meet and greet event and a talk show, which will take place at OCBC Space BSD, Tangerang.
Before meeting with Minister of Youth and Sports Dito, Phil Handy, accompanied by Secretary General of Perbasi Nirmala Dewi and Cristina Russo, a representative of the Italian Basketball Federation, held a discussion with Deputy for Improving Sports Achievements.
Present were Surono, Director of LPDUK Ferry Yuniarto Kono, and Special Staff of the Minister of Youth and Sports for Improving Achievements and Development of the Sports Industry Ardima Rama Putra, who is also the Acting General Chairperson of Perbasi. (rp)
