Warning! Those trying to incite communal conflicts during election campaign will be jailed

Jakarta, IO – The 2024 election campaign period will run for 75 days, from November 28 to February 10. During the campaign period, there are a number of prohibitions according to Law 7/2017 on General Elections.

Article 280 of Law 7 outlines what constitutes election crimes that can be punished with imprisonment, per Kompas, Wednesday (12/7).

Candidates and election participants are prohibited from insulting others’ tribe, religion, race and social group (SARA), inciting and pitting one community against another and disturb public order. The law also forbids them from using government facilities, places of worship, and educational institutions to make promise, give money or other material goods to election campaign participants.

According to Article 521 of Law 17, election participants who violate the campaign rules as stipulated in Article 280, will be sentenced to two years in prison and a fine of Rp24 million.

After the campaign period, there will be “cooling down period” for three days, from February 11-13.

On February 14, simultaneous poll will be held throughout Indonesia to elect a president and vice president, members of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD), House of Representatives (DPR) and Regional Legislative Councils (DPRD) at the provincial and regency/municipality level. (at)
