Mochamad Chalid, polymer technology expert from the University of Indonesia’s Faculty of Engineering, said that people do not need to worry about EG content in food packaging made from PET because it is of low level and though a safe production process.
“The public doesn’t need to panic excessively about the content of EG and DEG in PET bottles because there are still within a tolerable limit,” said Chalid.

EG in PET bottles is only used as binding compound, which is difficult to break down unless it is heated to 200 degrees Celsius. However, in medicine, EG is considered dangerous because it is used to dissolve medicinal ingredients and can enter the body because once ingested. (*)
