Jakarta, IO – Pasar Mayestik (Mayestik Market), located on Jalan Tebah III in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, has made a dramatic breakthrough by transforming its rooftop into an urban farming area, to encourage food security.

Urban farming on Pasar Mayestik’s rooftop commenced on February 24, 2024. When the Independent Observer visited the garden, the chili plants grown in the greenhouse were being watered.

Around 215 of these chili plants are grown over the 75-square-meter area. On average, 3-5 kg of chilies can be harvested every week. The harvest is usually sold at a lower price to local vendors at Pasar Mayestik, so that food price stability can be maintained.

Chili plant production is currently using Biotech techniques. In the future, more plants suitable for urban farming, such as melons and watermelons, will be grown.
