Uposatha Day: a day to practice the teachings of the Buddha

Jakarta, IO – Located at Prof Dr. Satrio Street No 2, South Jakarta, Vihara Amurva Bhumi is a monastery with a distinctive touch of Chinese architecture.

The typical pointed roof of the gate is decorated with 2 dragon statues and a pearl in the middle, with Chinese writing on the pillars. The dragons symbolize a high and exalted figure.

The monastery has stood for hundreds of years and was restored for the first time in 1984.

Independent Observer visited the Amurva Bhumi Monastery during Uposatha Day, a day when Buddhists observed and practiced the eight precepts (Uposatha Sīla/Atthasīla) as the teachings of the Buddha.

The celebration took place when the moon was dark and when it was bright, and halfway between the two, with the monks performing the Pātimokkha recitation.
