The woe of textile industry in the face of recession

Depok, IDM – Textile industry workers finish their work at PT Otvit Garmen Indonesia, Cimanggis, Depok (9/11).

A number of companies in the textile and apparel (TPT) sector have reportedly been laid off. The wave of layoffs in the industry is believed to be caused by looming recession in a number of export destinations. The decrease in the number of textile workers can also be seen from the Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data. BPS head Margo Yuwono said there was 50,000 workers less in August this year compared to last year. According to the Indonesian Textile Association (API), the textile industry is indeed struggling, especially in West Java, the largest production hub. The association noted that dozens of factories have faced a crisis, forcing them to retrench about 45,000 workers. (Pramita Hendra)
