The IKN Nusantara: an ill-protected new state capital

Air Chief Marshal Chappy Hakim
Air Chief Marshal Chappy Hakim, Assumed his appointment as Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Air Force in 2002 and served to 2005. In 2019, Chappy Hakim founded and led PSAPI – the Indonesian Center for Air Power Studies or ICAP.

Advances in aviation technology have allowed airspace to be exploited as a battlefield. Therefore, no point on the earth’s surface is safe from air attacks. The IKN Nusantara location is no exception. An air defense system should be built and developed to protect IKN Nusantara from possible air attacks, which has been included as part of the master plan for developing the new state capital.

Analyzing the vulnerability of an air attack threat suggests we look back to Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the 9/11 incident in 2001. In 1941, a sudden air attack by the air feet of the Royal Japanese Navy was very shocking and embarrassing to the American Military.

In The Future of War: A History book, the Pearl Harbor attack is referred as The Origin of American Military Failure, which had the American war thinkers realizing the need for an ADIZ (Air Defense Identification Zone) and an early warning system as two steps most required to reduce the potential threat of air attacks. The U.S. responded to the Pearl Harbor attack by detonating atomic bombs in 1945.

The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki forced Japan to surrender and effectively ended World War II.

In 2001, an attack was aimed at the U.S. Center of Gravity. Known as “9/11”, it was a coordinated terrorist hijacking of commercial airlines aimed toward prominent American buildings: The World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon, and the White House in Washington, D.C.

The attack, referred to as The Second Pearl Harbor, resulted in the death of 2763 U.S. citizens and over 550 foreign nationals. The U.S Government is considered to have failed in not anticipating it.
