The history of Betawi’s Ondel-Ondel begins with ancestor worship

Jakarta, IO – Indonesia has many ethnic groups that have coexisted since the Dutch colonial era. One of them is the Betawi people, the majority of whom reside in Jakarta.

There are many interesting things can be learned from the Betawi people. In addition to their traditional food, the Betawi people are also known for their unique culture that is still well preserved up to this day.

Ondel-ondel is part of this unique traditions. The giant effigies are often performed at Betawi people’s parties. Not only that, in recent years ondel-ondel can also be found in many places, including offices in the capital which highlight Jakarta’s distinctive cultural symbol.
