Jakarta, IO – Acting Mayor of Yogyakarta Sugeng Purwanto presented certificates and awards to the winners of the 2024 Kotabaru Heritage Film Festival (KHFF) film competition, held at SMAN 3 Yogyakarta’s Widoro Kandang Field on Sunday, August 11, 2024.
The KHFF 2024 recognized four outstanding film categories: Karyanagri Awards, Mahaditya Awards, Purwasesa Awards, and Sahasrakarya Awards. Each category celebrates cultural heritage while offering participants a deep and meaningful experience, wrapped in rich entertainment.
Sugeng Purwanto expressed his appreciation to all winners and participants of the KHFF 2024 film competition. He also praised the Yogyakarta City Cultural Agency for organizing such a remarkable event.
“The KHFF 2024 is not simply an appreciation of films that highlight and promote cultural heritage, but it also serves as an important platform to raise awareness about Indonesia’s cultural diversity,” he said.
Sugeng emphasized the powerful role of film in conveying moral and cultural values, inspiring a love for the homeland, and strengthening the nation’s identity.
“KHFF 2024 showcased the best of Indonesian cinema and also brought the nation’s flavors to life in Pasar Kobar, celebrating the diversity of local culinary. This event played a significant role in driving Yogyakarta’s economy, empowering the community and fostering economic growth,” added Sugeng.
The film “Under the Idhum Tree,” directed by Raka Satria Bahagia, took home the Golden Mahaditya Award for Best Film. The Mahaditya category, symbolizing the brightest light, focuses on independent voices that creatively narrate cultural heritage through cinema. It embodies a spirit of democratic perspectives, highlighting uniqueness and sovereignty.
Under the Idhum Tree, a documentary, tells the journey of Raden Wedono Jogosukismo, also known as Mbah Muji Raharja, a devoted servant at the Royal Cemetery of Imogiri.
“We gained new experience throughout the making of this film, especially during the shooting at the Royal Cemetery of Imogiri, where we had to adhere to local customs and carefully direct our main character,” shared Angel Ching, a representative of the Under the Idhum Tree film team, following receiving their award.

The film tells Raden Wedono Jogosukismo’s journey, also known as Mbah Muji Raharja, who served at the Royal Cemetery. “We are deeply grateful to Mbah Muji Raharja for allowing us to bring his story to life in this film. The entire process was a learning experience for us,” she added.
Now in its second year, the Kotabaru Heritage Film Festival (KHFF) continues to be a highlight in the Kotabaru Cultural Heritage Area of Yogyakarta. The 2024 edition took place from August 9 to August 11 at Padmanaba Hall and Field, SMA Negeri 3 Yogyakarta. (des)
