Jakarta, IO – Tension flared up again between the North and South Korea. Most recently, the North fired hundreds of artillery shells into waters off the east and west coasts of its southern neighbour, targeting a maritime “buffer zone” established in 2018 to reduce tensions between the two countries.

“About 250 artillery shells were fired on Tuesday (18/10) night,” said South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Kim Seung-kyum, as reported by Kompas on Wednesday (19/10).

South Korea called the action a clear violation of the 2018 agreement. “We strongly urge North Korea to immediately cease its actions,” Gen. Kim said in a statement, adding that North Korea’s continued provocations undermine the peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula and the global community. Meanwhile, North Korea said the attack was intended to ward off enemy war games against it along the border.
